There are thousands of rivers in the world.
Lots of towns and cities are next to rivers.
Rivers are also important habitats for lots of animals.
Rivers start in mountains or hills.
When it rains, the water goes downhill …
… and becomes a stream.
The stream gets bigger...
... and becomes a small river.
The river gets bigger...
... and bigger
... and it forms an estuary.
Finally, the water in the estuary goes into the sea.

VALENTINE'S DAY

Valentine's Day is celebrated on 14th February.

It is a festival of love and it's a very popular celebration in many countries around the world, including Australia, Canada, France, Italy, Denmark, Mexico, the United States, and the United Kingdom. In the past it was a celebration of romantic love but at present times it extends to the relations of friendship between people too and children celebrate this day at school.

VALENTINE'S DAY TRADITIONS

A very popular tradition is Valentine's cards.

Children write cards for their parents and friends.

Young people make handmade cards and write love poems or rhymes on them for their girlfriends and boyfriends.
Many people give cards, letters, flowers (especially red roses), chocolates, rings or other presents to the person they love. They sometimes have a romantic dinner for two at home or in a restaurant or a night in a hotel.

Parents, families and groups of friends sometimes send Valentine's cards too.

Valentine's cards are often decorated with images of hearts, red roses or Cupid, the Roman god of LOVE.

Traditionally cards and love messages were anonymous, especially in the UK, but today people often sign the cards.

RED is the colour of LOVE.

PANCAKE RACES

SOME HISTORY

Pancake races started in 1445 in Olney (England).

The traditions says that a woman was making pancakes when she heard the church bells ring. She put on a scarf on her head and ran to the churchwearing an apron, and a pan with a pancake in her hand.

Today there are races for women, men and children in every big city or small town.
These are the rules to participate in a race:
  • Wear a head scarf and an apron.
  • Toss the pancake at the start and at the end, after crossing the finish line, to prove that the pancake is still in the pan.
The traditional prize is a "Kiss of Peace" from the bell-ringer.

INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION

There is a friendly women competition between two cities: Liberal (Kansas, the USA) and Olney ( England, the UK). This competition started in 1950. The 2 races start simultaneously at 11:55 a.m. and women run about 380 metres to the church.
This is a video of 2012 competition in the town of Olney(England).

Today is February 7th. It's Chinese New Year Eve.  2016 is The Year of the Monkey... the Fire Monkey!
Each of the twelve animals in the Chinese Zodiac has unique characteristics and each year corresponds to one animal. 2016 corresponds to the Monkey. If you were born in 1968, 1980, 1992, 2004, 2016 you are a Monkey.
It is the year of the Monkey and it is also the year of Fire, one of the Five Elements (wood, fire, earth, metal and water). Fire is also associated with the colour red, so The Year of the Fire Monkey is also called the Year of the Red Monkey.
